About :- 

The Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani ( where Kala means death or time and Pani means water in Sanskrit) was a colonial prison in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India. This most dreaded and gruelling colonial prison situated in the remote archipelago was used by the British particularly to exile Indian political prisoners., this jail witnessed the most atrocious punishments imposed on prisoners. India’s struggle for independence saw imminent freedom fighters in this jail. The jail is now open to public viewing as a National Memorial, and its museum gives one a glimpse of years of India’s struggle for freedom. The jail remains closed on Monday and during Public Holidays.

Attractions & Activities:-

Attending the sound, and light show at the Cellular Jail in the evening is a must over a holiday in Andaman. Declared as the National Memorial off lately, it houses freedom fighters Photo and Exhibition Gallery on the ground floor. The first floor of the building has an Art Gallery, Netaji Gallery and a Library on Freedom Movement. A gallery dedicated to the first War of Independence and a gallery of old photographs is also there in the museum. Right in the center of the jail, there’s Swatantrya Jyoti, erected in the memory of all freedom fighters.

Timings :- 09:00 AM to 12:30 PM, 01:30 PM to 04:45 PM.

English: 07:15 pm, Monday, Wednesday & Friday

Best Time To Visit :- 

The best time to visit the Cellular Jail will be October to March. ON an average, the region witnesses average temperature of almost 22° Celsius, which is just the perfect to go for a sightseeing tour.

How to reach in :- 

It is located at Atlanta Point which will take around 18 minutes to reach from Port Blair. To reach the cellular jail, one can take a taxi, rickshaw, bus or minibuses from anywhere in the city.
